♫Patterns♫

This is one of those songs that has a backstory which I will include below where the lyrics go. They all have a story actually, BUT sometimes it is Kismet revealing what was written long ago.

In the late nineties, my friend Bud Clifton took this song (my version) to one of Willie Nelson’s best friends and played it for him. His name was Pappy (or was it Poppy?) and he used to run a place called The Great American Restaurant Experience (or something like that) in LA. He said to Bud, “You can imagine how many people bring me songs that they want Willie to hear, I just toss them, but this one, Wow! Willie is going to love this song and I will give it to him as soon as he gets back from his tour next week. I was over The Moon, yes? Pappy died of a heart attack a few days later. That isn’t even the ironic kicker to the tale. The kicker is that this same thing happened several times. When God wants things to play out his way, he makes sure of it. So… there is not a drop of disappointment in me cause… heh heh. yeah, I know something. I know a little bit about something coming.

I need to mention that Franklin Russell added the hook in the song; start all over start all over again, and by rights… if this song ever gets any significant airplay should rightly share in the authorship and royalties from this song. Thank you, Franklin.

Lyrics

Oh well the Sun comes up

and the Sun goes down

and the Moon comes out

and the world spins around

and the streets go by

and the lights go on

and then the lights go out

and we must all move on

you know I wonder some

and I look for signs

And then the Sun comes up

and I'm way behind

Life is always weaving the same pattern

is that you? no... no you must be mistaken

shadows break on your face

and I am certain

I've got to start all over

start all over again

I've got to start all over

start all over again

you were close to me

like it was destiny

and then time went by

now you're a memory

I hear the nightbirds sing

I watch the fireflies

they say we all must change

is that your alibi?

the tide comes in

and the tide returns

and I dance on the shore

and I never learn

that life is always weaving the same pattern

is that you? no... no you must be mistaken

shadows break on your face

and I am certain

I've got to start all over

start all over again

I've got to start all over

start all over again

Well, the Sun comes up

and then the Sun goes down

and the Moon comes out

and the world spins around...
